Superimpose proposed a bold intervention for the Masterplan in Changzhi. An urban canopy will mark the center of the new creative district. The canopy will be enclosed by a transparent glass facade and provides a hub for a daily market but also offers public ‘pockets’ and will host events such as fairs and exhibitions.
After the regeneration and demolishing of a larger part of the former village, many residents lost their store and place to sell products. Superimpose managed to convince the client to make good use of the current empty land in the center of the Masterplan and develop it partly into the covered market square. The market provides shelter and a place for the local community to continue selling their products whilst providing a public hub in the Masterplan.
The canopy connects regenerated factories to newly proposed buildings at both ends of the site. The 3000 SQM roof has 4 circular openings, which bring daylight in the vast space but also provide outdoor public pockets and enhance accessibility. Wires are used to frame the openings and creates an architectural backdrop to the market and shades the outdoor circular seating area.
