Net-Zero City
Net-Zero City
Superimpose proposed a green axis concept for the Net Zero Industrial Park located in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. The office was invited to participate in the tender for an extension of 70,000 square meters to the mixed use research and development masterplan of the park, originally designed by the masterplanning architect. The site is situated approximately 21 kilometers west of the city of Ordos.
The proposed development includes research and development facilities, a conference center, a hotel, exhibition spaces, and retail functions. The 500 meter long plan is organized along a central green axis, creating a strong spatial and ecological backbone for the masterplan.

The clean and pragmatic design takes inspiration from client’s goal helping to transform a renowned coal producing region into a clean energy region with a leading net-zero industrial system. With Superimpose we believe that Architecture is not about adding a series of large buildings to a site. We believe that is it about connectivity, layering, meaning and creativity. The masterplan is comprised of two important layers:
The first layer is the ‘green axis’, a green corridor connecting all functions together from East to West and allowing for the surrounding nature to enter the site. The axis is planted with native plants becoming a green highway for the 500-meter-long development. Centrally located on the North side of the green axis, the business hotel and the conference center are the Architectural highlights of the scheme. Both act as a powerful object giving identity to the scheme. Facing the hotel and conference center on the south side of the green axis a series of buildings acts as commercial support. To mark the end of the development each end of the green axis has a viewing platform that visually connects the design to the surrounding grass lands.
The second layer is a large ‘canopy’ measuring 200 by 500 meter. Due to the sloping site the canopy is flush with the land on the East, however, gently becomes a series of bridges towards the West as the landscape slopes down. With this strategy we can smartly connect all functions and add parking and road circulation on the ground floor while maintaining a smooth uninterrupted pedestrian circulation. This strategy basically creates two ground floors, doubling the value of the scheme.
