Shadow Play

Shadow Play

Shadow play lets children grow visually and adults feel young again. Superimpose Architecture responded to the Beijing Kids Design Week theme, ‘Grow Down and Shrink Up’, by creating ‘Shadow Playground’.

This interactive and low-tech installation is meant for the young to optically grow and for the adults to feel young again. Kids and adults can explore their imagination in a simple and low-tech way that blurs the differences between all ages by using shadow projections. ‘Shadow Play’ is not meant as an art piece but to be accessible, fun and inviting to people of all ages to explore the simple relationship between light, body and the shadow.

The installation is composed from 11 independent hanging cones that are illuminated from the inside by flashlights. By grabbing these lights and aiming them towards the fabric cones, shadow projections can be casted. By doing this, the projections of objects or body parts such as hands or heads are increased or deformed representations of reality.

In order to have flexible material that allows for light transmission textile is being used. The fabric is sculpted as a cone of 2 meters tall and with a 1.4m diameter base tapered up to 700 mm diameter at the top. The 11 cones are suspended from the ceiling and part of them is suspended upside-down to allow for different shadows to be casted. Together, the cones form an interesting architectural composition. Superimpose collaborated with a local Beijing tailor to develop and design the specificities of the installation.
